சங்க காலம் தொடங்கி ஒவ்வொரு காலகட்டத்திலும் இலக்கியம் ஒவ்வொரு வகையான சமூகத்தையும் அதன் மக்களையும் பதிவு செய்து வருகிறது. அதே சமயம் நவீன இலக்கியம் தொடங்கிய காலகட்டத்தில் மக்களின் வாழ்க்கை நிகழ்வுகளையும் கலை, இலக்கியம், பண்பாடு போன்றவற்றையும் தமிழ் இலக்கியம் பதிவு செய்துள்ளது. அப்படியாக ஒரு குறிப்பிட்டச் சமூகம் அல்லது சிறு குழு என்று அழைக்கக்கூடிய மாற்றுத்திறனாளர்களைப் பற்றி தமிழ் இலக்கியம் மிக விரிவாகப் பேசவில்லை என்றாலும், ஆங்காங்கே இவர்களின் வாழ்வு மற்றும் உளவியல் சிக்கல்கள் பற்றிப் பதிவு செய்துள்ளது. அத்தகைய ஒரு பதிவாக மு. வரதராசன் எழுதிய கரித்துண்டு என்னும் நாவல் மாற்றுத்திறனாளர் ஒருவனைப் பற்றியதாகும். கால்களை இழந்த ஒரு ஓவியர் சாலை ஓரங்களில் படம் வரைந்து தன் வாழ்வை நடத்தி வருகிறார். அவரைக் கண்ட கதாசிரியர் என்னும் கதை சொல்லி அவரை பின்தொடர்ந்து அவர் வாழ்வில் நடந்த நிகழ்வுகளையும் அவர் சமூகத்தின் மீது கொண்ட அக்கறையும் அந்த சமூகம் இவர் மீது கொண்ட அக்கறையும் இந்நாவலில் விரிவாக பேசவில்லை என்றாலும், சிறு சிறு இடங்களில் தொட்டுக்காட்டி சென்ருக்கிறது, அதில் சிறு பகுதிகளை முதன்மையாக வைத்து மாற்றுத்திறனிய நோக்கில் மு வ வின் கரித்துண்டு நாவல் என்கிற நோக்கில் ஆராயப்படுகிறது. குடும்பத்திலும் சமூகத்திலும் மற்றும் தனிப்பட்ட வாழ்விலும் ஒவ்வொரு மாற்றுத்திறனாளரும் எதிர்கொள்ளும் பிரச்சனைகளையும் அவற்றின் தீர்வுகளையும் பற்றி இந்நாவல் பேசுகிறது.

From the Sangam age, literature in each period has recorded a particular type of society and its people. At the same time, in the period when modern literature began, Tamil literature has recorded people's life events, art, literature, culture, and so on. As such, Tamil literature has not spoken extensively about a specific community or a small group called the disabled. However, it has recorded their lives and psychological problems here and there. As one such record, the novel "Karisithundu" written by M. Varadarajan is about a disabled person. A painter who has lost his legs lives his life by drawing pictures on the roadside. The author, who is the narrator, follows him and the events that happened in his life, his concern for society, and the society's concern for him are not discussed in detail in this novel, but are indicated in small places. This study primarily focuses on those small parts to examine M. Varadarajan's novel "Karisithundu" from the perspective of disability studies. This novel talks about the problems faced by every disabled person in the family, society, and personal life, and their solutions.
