தமிழ் இலக்கிய வரலாற்றில் 2000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முந்திய தமிழ் சமூகத்தின் அடையாளத்தைச் சுமந்து நிற்கும் நூல் புறநானூறாகும். தமிழர் வாழ்வின் வரலாறு மற்றும் வீரத்தை விளக்கும் இலக்கியம். ஈகையும் கொடையும் இரு கண்களென வாழ்ந்த ஈர மனமுடைய தமிழர்களின் இரவாப் புகழ் பேசும் எழுத்து ஓவியம் புறநானூறு. புறநானூற்றுப் புலவர்கள், மன்னர்கள் குறுநில மன்னர்கள் வேளிர்கள் போன்றவர்களின் ஈகையையும் கொடையையும் பாடியதோடு மட்டுமல்லாமல் பாணர்கள் புலவர்கள் விறலியர் போன்றவர்களை ஆற்றுப்படுத்தும் ஆற்றுப்படைப் பாடல்களையும் படைத்துள்ளனர். ஆற்றுப்படைப் பாடல்களில் மன்னர்களின் நாட்டு வளம், அவர்களின் ஈகைப் பண்பு, பாணர், புலவர், விறலியரின் வறுமை நிலை போன்றவற்றைப் பாடி அவர்களை ஆற்றுப்படுத்திய திறத்தை விளக்குவதே இவாய்வின் நோக்கமாகும்.

In the history of Tamil literature, the work that bears the identity of Tamil society from over two thousand years ago is Purananuru. It is a literary text that vividly portrays the history and heroism of the Tamil people. Purananuru stands as a literary painting that speaks of the undying fame of the generous-hearted Tamils, who regarded charity and munificence as their two eyes in life. The poets of Purananuru not only praised the generosity and liberality of kings, chieftains, and Velir rulers, but also composed Āttuppaṭai poems that offered guidance and encouragement to bards, poets, and viraliyar (female performers). These Āttuppaṭai poems describe the prosperity of the kings’ realms, their charitable virtues, and the impoverished condition of bards, poets, and performers, while directing them toward generous patrons. The objective of this study is to examine and explain the poetic skill with which such encouragement is articulated in the Āttuppaṭai poems of Purananuru.
