Juvenile Recurrent Parotitis – A Rare Case Report

E. Pradeepa* , J. Venkatesh**, K. Ramya***, L. Vijayalakshmi****, Ravi David Austin*****

Abstract

Juvenile recurrent parotitis (JRP) is a rare disease characterized by repeated episodes of non-obstructive, non-suppurative inflammation of the parotid gland in young children. Various causative factors have been proposed for JRP, including congenital malformations of the duct, genetic factors, viral or bacterial infections, allergies, and local manifestations of autoimmune diseases. Unfortunately, no preventive therapy is currently available for JRP. In this report, we describe a case of JRP that was diagnosed clinically and confirmed by ultrasonography and sialography. To the best of our knowledge, very few cases of JRP have been previously reported from India.

Probiotics and its Application in Dentistry – An Overview

Jaiganesh Ramamurthy* **

Abstract

Probiotics are bacterial cultures or living microorganisms that, when ingested in certain numbers, exert health benefits beyond general nutrition and support a good and healthy intestinal bacterial flora. The efficacy of probiotics in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases is well-established. Probiotic organisms are thought to act through a variety of mechanisms, including competition with potential pathogens for nutrients or enterocyte adhesion sites, degradation of toxins, production of antimicrobial substances, and local/systemic immunomodulation. Experimental studies and results from randomized controlled trials have shown that certain gut bacteria, particularly species of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, may exert beneficial effects in the oral cavity by inhibiting cariogenic streptococci and Candida spp. The periodontal pathogens can be regulated by antagonistic interactions with the administration of probiotics. Recent studies have shown reduced gum bleeding and symptoms of gingivitis with the application of L. reuteri. The lactobacilli flora have been shown to inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. Probiotic strains included in periodontal dressings were shown to diminish the number of most frequently isolated periodontal pathogens, such as Bacteroides spp., Actinomyces spp., and S. intermedius. This article summarizes the application of probiotics in dentistry.

Orthodontic – Oral Surgery Inter–relationship a Review

SathishKumar N.* , Rajasigamani K. **, Thangavelu Annamalai***, K. Thirumurugan****, Baskar V.*****

Abstract

A multidisciplinary approach to dental treatment is highly desirable and can significantly improve treatment outcomes and the long-term prognosis of complex cases. Therefore, orthodontic therapy can no longer be isolated from the increasing treatment demands of other specialties. In patients requiring orthognathic surgery, the orthodontist uses various diagnostic methods, such as radiographs, study models, and photographs, to determine whether there is excess or deficiency of either jaw base and in which plane (sagittal, vertical, or transverse) the discrepancy exists. Together with the oral surgeon, the orthodontist decides on the degree of correction to be performed during orthognathic procedures and determines the treatment sequence.

Alignment of Blocked Out Bilateral Maxillary Lateralincisors in Adult Patient - A Case Report

K. Abhirami* **

Abstract

Anterior crossbite is a term used to describe an abnormal labiolingual relationship between one or more maxillary and mandibular teeth. This occurs as a result of disharmony in the dental, skeletal, or functional components of an orthognathic system. This paper demonstrates some of the advantages of using a pre-adjusted straight wire appliance and an acrylic splint to correct this malocclusion, rather than other conventional methods.
