Abstract

The rise in the rebar temperature impact the quality, strength and durability of the concrete. It is difficult to observe the raise or fall of the rebar temperature by naked eye. This paper focused on instrumentation used in civil structures. The intention of using the instrument in structural members is to fetch the behavior and characters of the structure based on external as well as internal factors. The sensors used in construction industry are classified in to parametric and self-generating types. A transducer is a device that converts one type of energy to another. From a secondary data i.e. publication, journals etc., it is captured that the instruments are assisting the human beings through data fetching and sharing for future application/ correction/ to adopt the preventive mechanism. In this paper work it is concluded that the capture of temperature pattern through Infrared Thermometers (IR), Thermocouples, Type K Thermocouples, Embedded temperature sensors, Digital Data Loggers sensors fixed with the rebar, so that the data may be fetched very comfortably and remotely.  The sensors or thermocouples shall be placed at critical spots like top mat, bottom mat, sunlit areas and shaded areas. Attach thermocouples securely with heat-resistant tape or steel ties, avoiding insulation between the sensor and steel. At least one sensor per 10-20 m² is recommended. Monitor the rebar temperature before pouring (temperature to ensure its within specification) the concrete, during pouring (in critical areas) the concrete, after pouring (early curing i.e. up to 72 hours to observe temperature gradients and heat of hydration effects) the concrete. Log readings are to be noted within 15-30 minutes. It is recommendable to correlate rebar temperature with ambient temperature and concrete mix temperature for quality purpose. With this instrumentation the temperature of the rebar may be controllable, in turn it yields the high-quality structural member. The value of the member is also enhanced and also the life of the member will serve for the design life.
